Dear Parents/Guardians: At our upcoming (PTA/PTO/Parent Advisory) meeting
on May 2nd at 8:30 am, you will have an opportunity to hear and give
input about a proposal that is being discussed in our district to
provide all teachers and staff members with time for increased
collaboration and instructional planning. The current proposal
includes a one day per month two hour late start for students in grades
K – 12 beginning with the 2013-14 school year. Childcare options for
elementary aged students are being explored with the YMCA and the Boys
and Girls Club for families who might need this type of assistance. The
approved AASD calendar for 2013-14 would not need to be extended to
accommodate this change. The purpose of this one day per month late start is to support staff by expanding professional collaboration opportunities for teams of educators (i.e. regular education teachers, special education teachers, student services staff, paraprofessionals) to:
·
analyze student
data
·
plan common
assessments, curriculum and instruction
·
develop cross
disciplinary activities
·
design
interventions and enrichments Research shows that, “Teacher collaboration in
strong professional learning communities improves the quality and equity
of student learning, promotes discussions that are grounded in evidence
and analysis rather than opinion, and fosters collective responsibility
for student success” (McLaughlin & Talbert, 2006). If you cannot attend the scheduled meeting, please do not hesitate to give me a call to discuss this important topic. I can be reached at 832-6205. Sincerely,
Matt Mineau
