Donated Equipment
Donated Equipment [Printer Friendly Version]
As of June 2009, the district has reached a point to where the infrastructure cost to bring in additional computers to the network is at a maximum. The infrastructure includes wiring, switches, licensing and software costs. The addition of 900+ pod computers has increased infrastructure costs by more than $200,000 per year. The computers in the district are on a replacement cycle, which is based on a combination of existing budget and the referendum dollars. At this time we can not afford to add any machines to the inventory, based on the ability to afford the replacement cycle. The computer expense becomes the smallest of the total cost of ownership dollars. At some point the district will revisit this, but for now we are about as full as we can afford.
Replacement cycling of older computers is based on need and software requests.
Donated Equipment - Specifications for Replacement
Schools may receive donations on their own (with principal approval) but the equipment will not be added to the network.
The school accepts responsibility for all recycling costs for any equipment it receives.
CPU
- 2.4 GHz or higher processor
- Multimedia with internal sound speaker
- CD-ROM (48X or better)
- Ethernet Network card (10/100) of the following brands: Intel, Compaq, 3COM, Broadcom
- 40 Gig Hard drive
- Must be able to hand 1024 X 768 resolution at high color (32bit)
Scanners

Printers
- Inkjet printers that have not been used for six month are more likely to fail and the price of the ink is more than the printer. LaserJet printers can be accepted as stand alone devices for schools. However, we will accept HP LaserJet printers with Jet Direct cards of 100Mg connectivity if the printer is in working condition and less than four years old.
Monitors
- Must be 19" or greater
- Must be able to handle resolution of 1024 X 768 at high color (16 bit)
- Delivered in a bulk process of 10 or more if 19"
- No CRT monitors are accepted.
It is important that the schools do not accept donations unless there qualifications are met. Please understand that even FREE computers cost money:
- Yearly licensing per computer for Antivirus, Network access license, Microsoft Office Suite license and other software is approximately $85.00 per year.
- Network access switch ports cost approximately $70.00 per unit attached.
- Electricity costs approximately $12.00 per year and the typical maintenance is estimated at $20.00 per year.
Scanning Instructions
Scanning Instructions [Printer Friendly Version]
Log onto the computer next to the scanner.
Double click on the HP Precision Pro icon located on the desktop (Similar to the picture below)
The first time you log on to use the scanner you will get an introduction. You can complete the Scanner Wizard is about 15 minutes. After that initial time, you will not see the introduction again. If you feel you want to review something you can always access the wizard by click on the menu item Help, then sliding down and highlighting HP ScanJet Coach for General Scanning. The introduction will then reappear and you can work through it again
Place the original document face down in the scanner in the upper right corner snug to the top.
The first screen you will encounter is a gray blank rectangle with HP Precision Scan Pro at the top.
Click on the Output Type
If you wish to simply scan the image in and not tailor it in anyways, we recommend keeping it at True Color. This will give you a very clean crisp image whether your document is all text or contains graphic images; however, you cannot change your document in anyways if you select this option.
If you wish to scan the image and have the ability to edit it, then we recommend clicking on Text & Image. This is a bit fussier and doesn't do a good job of editing graphic but it does edit text quite well. If you select this option you will see a check mark next to Text & Image.
To scan the image, go to Scan - Scan to. A small gray dialog box will appear, allowing you to direct your scanned image into any of the Microsoft Office programs. Scroll down to find all the possibilities and select which program you want your image to appear in. Click once on the program and then click Scan.
The scanner will now being the scanning process. You should hear it making noises as it moves up and down the scanner.
Once completed you will see your image in the program you selected before. now you can save, print or edit your image depending on the output type selected.
TIPS
To see a quick preview of your image and what it should look like once it is "officially" scanned, click once on the far left icon that looks like a scanner with the lid flipped open. That will show you what your end will look like.
The scanner is NOT foolproof. Depending on the size and font in your original document, the scanner could read the number 5 as an 8 or a 2 as a 5. That's why you might want to set your output device to text and image so that you can edit your document. Always proof what you scan since the scanner can and will make errors in its translating.
The scanner may give different results each scan. Mistakes made on the first scan can be corrected on the second scan but new "mis-readings" can occur. Another reason to double-check your work before publishing it for others.
The scanner computers do not have software to edit graphics. At this time I would recommend you attempt editing text only.

Files within your H: drive that you should not delete. [Printer Friendly Version]
If you you get in the mood to "clean house" within your H: drive, make sure you do not delete any of the folders you see below. If you do delete these folders, you will lose valuable information. For example if you delete your Address Book folder, you will lose your personal address book.
