Movie Maker Instructions
[Software/includes/frontpage_2003_tutorials.htm]Movie Maker Instructions [Printer Friendly Version]
Written by: Paul Endter
Movie Maker is part of the XP and newer operating platform
In-district:
Start - AASD Programs - Accessories - Movie Maker
Home computer:
XP: Start - Programs - Accessories or do a search “movie maker”
Vista: Start button - All Programs - Windows Movie Maker
Movie Maker uses a series of sub folders: Pictures, Videos, Sound
Students using the program:
Computer will save their project on the computer they are working on UNLESS the student designates otherwise. Might not get to that step.
-If use the same computer, then all materials are there.
-If use a different computer… the materials are NOT there for them to find.
Suggestion: get all the pieces together and build them on a single computer.
Suggestion 2: save everything onto a flash drive.
Suggestion 3: save on the j drive BUT must be done by the same person logged on each time. (if working as a team/group…same person must log on and save each time).
When you need to stop, Save it!!!
Choose File- “Save Project As…”
Make sure you tell the computer what drive you want it saved to.
Make a new folder prior to saving it.
Project icon is an old fashioned movie reel.
Finished product looks a filmstrip. (WMV) Windows Media/Audio File
When want to work on it again, find the project icon and open itStep 1
Capture video: School computers won't let you do "Capture from Video Device" (Digital camera formats:
- Load onto a VCR only
- Small tape inside the camera (mini-DV) need a USB connecting cable
- DVD Camera - Can use the DVD or USB cable.
The other three options work at school. You can change the "drive" to be from a flash drive, etc.
If you have a Pinnacle card or card from Sears ($199 Sony product) then can download direct from camera.
Stand alone devices with DVD tray and USB connector plus a S-Video (same program as iMovie from MAC)

Your imported pictures will show up in the middle section. You can cut or delete those you don't want.
Play Feature:
The right and side shows the amount of time and you can play it anytime. To start at the beginning move the cursor back to the first slide.
If you take a picture from the internet, the program will "enlarge" the image and it may be more grainy. That is one of the limitations of this program. There is no way to correct it.
Importing sound/music
Copyright law is important!!
AASD subscribes to Soundzabound music database or you can utilize anything else that is FREE.
Soundzabound can be found on the internet: www.soundzabound.com
You must download the song you want, save it to a flash drive or your H:/ drive, J:/ drive, etc. Find it on your drive and click Import
Click and drag the song file to the movie line just like you were to add pictures

To change the order of the sound clips:
- Click on slide 1 for the first sound clip.
- Move mouse and click on where you want the next clip.
- Drag that clip down to the storyboard at the end where you want it to start playing.
Volume function will set the loudness of the clip
Right click on the sound clip you want to edit.
Adjust it so that the music/sound does not overshadow any voice audio
Show Timeline icon- switches your storyboard from the slides to the music editing view.
Soundzabound Steps:

The narrative will be a clip. You can then move it, adjust the volume.
Click on Start Narration button. You will see the track moving at the bottom (vertical blue line). Music will be playing in the background. It will go WITH the clip if you move it. Suggest adjusting the volume before you add narration. You will be asked to save the narration to a file. Make sure you change it to your H:\ drive, flash drive, etc.
When you need to stop, Save it!!!
Choose File- “Save Project As…”

STEP 2:

Click on the icon for (ex Rotate 90) and drag it onto the slide you want to change.
Adding a Title Slide:
Saving Final Movie
- Saving takes a lot of disk space.
- 1 GB might not hold a long video
- 2 GB will probably only hold one video
- WARNING!!! Default drive is the C:\ drive which is the computer you are working on!. Student H:\ drive space is 100 MB. A video may or may not fit on their H:\ drive.
- Suggestion: Use teacher's J:\ drive (Staff and Student Folder)
Finish Movie
Note: Once it is saved as a final movie, you can NOT edit or make changes. Students making their own video or part of video, then you can string several videos together.
"Save Movie Wizard" will walk you through the steps. When you click on the Finish button, it will open as a movie so you can view it in Windows Media Player. You can adjust the volume level at the bottom of the screen.

Convert PowerPoint slideshow to a PhotoStory movie
[Software/includes/insert_flash_movie_in_web_page.htm]Convert PowerPoint slideshow to a PhotoStory movie [Printer Friendly Version]
Save your PowerPoint as a JPEG. Click on the arrow by "Save as type:" and scroll down to JPEG File Interchange Format.
Open PhotoStory
Import the files you just exported from PowerPoint
Arrange your pictures in the order you want them. You can also rotate and edit them.
If one of your slides has a picture and you want to add a caption, this is where you would do it, otherwise you will skip this part
PowerPoints often have words that do not lend themselves to the "Motions" part of PhotoStory. Here are the directions for moving all motion.
Click on the "Customize Motion..." button
Click on the top box "Specify start and end position of motion." This will activate other boxes
Generally someone will be narrating the presentation. Timing needs to be adjusted for each slide. Do this by clicking the radio button under Duration called "Number of seconds to display the picture"
The first slide will need the box checked "Set start position..." The end slide will need only the box checked "Set end position" All of the other slides require both boxes to be checked.
When you are finished with these settings... You can use the "Preview" button to check the timing, to see if any slides were skipped, etc.
- If everything looks good, click Close
- You can also change the transitions. Be wary of too many transitions and/or as it can cause the viewer to lose track of what the content is as the eyes try to focus on the changing pictures.
- Each slide will now have a time (ex. 00.09) showing how long each slide will be displayed
You can now add sound by using the record button
Always remember to click Save Project before closing out PhotoStory. This will save your project so that you can continue working later.
Add music from Zounds Abound or other copyright free music sources.
Network location: S:\Staff and Students\Soundzabound
Next save it for playback on your computer
Under File name you will probably need to click on it and then scroll left to see the full title of the file. This is important in finding it again
You can also change what folder you want it stored in and where you want it saved onto - your H drive, flash drive, etc.
Click on Next and it will compile your project. (Building your story)
If you don't want to "View your story" or "Create a new story" click Exit
Saving the File as a Project
Always click Yes. This finalizes your project so you can retrieve it and edit later.
Here is where you can change the File name if you have been working on different versions of the same title (example: audio voice/ music added)
