The Appleton Area School District believes that a healthy eating pattern is essential for students to achieve there full academic potential, full physical and mental growth, and lifelong health and well-being. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has published research, which shows that poor nutrition has an adverse effect on school performance, and that even moderate under-nutrition can have lasting effects on the cognitive development of children. The research also indicates that poor nutrition can lead to trouble in problem solving, more behavioral problems (such as aggression or hyperactivity), feelings of anxiety or other emotional problems, and lower test scores. Because nutrition plays such a vital role in the academic process, we encourage parents to supply their children with healthy snacks such as fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grain crackers or whole grain bread. Water is encouraged as the primary beverage, and supplemented with milk or 100% juice. We invite treats for classes that are healthy in nature. Johnston School uses the food pyramid as the basis for food selection, integrating foods that are low in sugar and which contain less that 30% of the calories come from fat. Fill in name Elementary is committed to providing the best education possible for it students and nutrition is a vital part of that commitment. Thank you for your support in helping to develop “Healthy Kids”.
