Activities
Mission Statement: The Huntley Community believes that all
children can learn. We are dedicated to providing a positive and
challenging environment that inspires student success.
STARS Program
Sixth grade students volunteer to tutor selected 2nd grade students
before school in reading. The program is designed to provide additional
reading support for younger students.
Huntley Healthy Kids
As part of a district initiative to emphasize healthy choices, the
Huntley Healthy Kids committee has a 1.5 mile “Roadrunner Rally” for all
Huntley families in September. Students also participate in
the Roadrunner Walk/Run club during recess.
One to One
This is a mentoring program with staff members mentoring selected
intermediate students. We have many staff members participating in this
program.
Artist-in-Residence
Artist-in-Residence guests at Huntley have included: Professor Gizmo
(science), author Peter Roop, paper
artist Tom Grade, Poet Laureate Ellen Kort, and musician Randy Peterson,
among others. The Huntley PTA has funded this program.
All School Dramas
In addition to plays performed by some classrooms, Huntley offers school
play(s) for interested students by grade level. In February 2008
students in grades 1-3 performed “Jungle Book” .
Playground Equipment
Kindergarten and main playground was installed by parent volunteers in
May of 2003.
Olweus Bullying Prevention Program
All staff have been trained in the research based Olweus Bullying
Prevention Program which was implemented in January of 2006. Students
and staff are committed to providing a safe learning environment for
all.
United for Reading Success
Trained community volunteers work with selected 1st grade students for
30 minutes each day on reading skills and strategies.
Math Achievement Partnership
Trained community volunteers work with selected 4th and 5th grade
students for 15 minutes 4 days per week on math skills and strategies.
Civil War Re-enactment
Fifth grade students spend a day participating in hands-on activities
with Civil War
re-enactors every May at Erb Park.
Random Acts of Kindness
Students and staff submit names and descriptions of random acts of
kindness completed by students, staff, or parents.
Foreign Language Exploratory Class
This popular exploratory class is offered in winter over a six week
period (one lunch period each week) for Huntley students.
PTA / Huntley Innovative Teaching Grants
We initiated this program using money donated by businesses through
their volunteer programs.
Junior Achievement
Junior Achievement brings business members to the classroom to teach
students concepts linked to business and education.
Roadrunner Reading Club
This highly successful reading club sponsored by our PTA encourages
children to read for enjoyment. This year almost 500 of our students
participated in the program.
Climbing Wall for students
Funded by Title VI grant and PTA money, the wall (44’ x 8’) was built by
volunteers from Huntley.
Positive Recognition – Choices for Children
In order to recognize our students who met our behavioral expectations
of being respectful, responsible, and safe we provide a noon hour choice
of indoor activities. They can participate in wall climbing, parachute,
board game room, flight room, video, art room or silent reading. Staff
members volunteer to facilitate these activities. These activities take
place in January and February. Staff also nominates students for the
Principal’s Recognition Award.
Ice Cream Social
Every August all staff and parents are invited to Huntley for an evening
of ice cream, music and conversation. It is a great way to meet new
people and reconnect with old friends.
Project Wisdom
At the beginning of the day a positive message is read to the students.
The messages are designed to build character, motivate students to do
their best, and build community.
Student Council
Our Student Council is very active and involved not only in the school,
but also the community. Past donations from our Student Council have
benefited the Community Clothes Closet, Harbor House, Hurricane Katrina
and Tsunami victims, and the Salvation Army.
Reading Specialist
The addition of a full time reading specialist has allowed for more
intensive instruction in reading for students in the primary grades. The
Reading Specialist also works collaboratively with K-6 teachers in
Communication Arts.

Every year PTA sponsors enrichment programs for our students.
