The Byzantine Empire:
  • Marks the division of the Roman Empire…Rome West-Rome.  Rome East-Constantinople the center/seat of the Byzantine Empire.
  • Did you know:  Eastern Half will live after the final fall of Rome West for another 1000 years!

The Age of Diocletian
  • 284 AD the formal split from Rome will occur…we know the problems that were ongoing in the Roman empire.  This was only one reason Rome identified with its eastern sister city.

  • Wasn’t Rome!  Lacked the problems of Rome West…so the transfer made sense.

Founding of Byzantium
  • Trace to the split by Diocletian in 284 AD
  • Split actually occurred in 330 AD with a split in the capital from Rome to Constantinople.

  • Religion: it was an amazing religious center that was to be based on the Byzantine tradition of splendor in architecture and faith.

  • Tough!  In 1100 years it was sieged almost relentlessly yet fell only 2 times…due in large part to the militaristic design of its cities inside the triple walls of Theodsius

  • Byzantines, not Romans coveted their faith and this was the worlds first religious state.

Characteristics of Byzantine Religion?
  • Monophytisim: Christ figure was not human but was divine living amongst us…different than Rome who advocated the dual role.
  • Icons: Romans used Icons to support their faith, an act deemed by Byzantium to be heresy
  • Many ways closer to Islam
