Senator Roth Tries Out Metal Working during American Education Week
In celebration of American Education Week, we've invited members of the community to "Team Up with a Teacher" and engage with our students in their classrooms.

This year we decided to focus on our Fine Arts classes, so community members could see the arts in action in our schools.

Senator Roger Roth took part in a Art Metals class at Appleton North and created a pendant from copper and silver.

First the students cut the metal into their desired shape.

Cutting the metal

Some students have chosen elaborate and complex shapes.

Once the shape is formed, they have to sand the edges down. This can take a couple of class periods to accomplish. Then they solder their shapes or layers together.

Senator Roth soldered an eagle on to a circle pendant.

They pickle the piece in an acidic solution and then buff away the residue.

Then, they just need to assemble their project. In this case it was a simple pendant necklace.

Thanks to the Art Metals class and their teacher Jessica Zitzelsberger for showing Senator Roth what our students take on in our art classes.
