McKinley Elementary in Appleton has earned a 2016-17 Wisconsin Title I School of Recognition Award. McKinley joins 21 other High-Progress Wisconsin schools in this honor.
All Wisconsin Title I Schools of Recognition receive federal Title I aid because they have significant numbers of students from low-income families based on the National School Lunch Act income guidelines.
Also, all schools must meet criteria including at least 95 percent test participation, a dropout rate of less than six percent, and an absenteeism rate of less than 13 percent.
High-Progress Schools, such as McKinley,
- fall within the top 10 percent of schools experiencing student growth in reading and mathematics for elementary and middle school students or the top 10 percent of schools with the greatest improvement in high school graduation rates, and
- have achievement gaps that are less than three (3) percentage points between student groups or
- show evidence of reducing gaps greater than three (3) percentage points.
Andrea Vinje, McKinley school principal said that McKinley’s “diverse student population comes with a willingness and excitement to learn, with a supportive parent community who entrusts and partners with us in their children's education.”
She continues, “we are blessed with high quality staff who value the art of facilitating student learning, fostering positive relationships and instilling values of global citizenship. A recognition of this caliber is humbling, exciting and affirms the work of our community each day!”
Pamela Franzke, AASD Title I Coordinator & Birth-Five Outreach Coordinator said that "McKinley students, families, staff and leadership are well-deserving of this acknowledgement. As a Title I school-wide program they have truly embraced the standard that is set by the Department of Public Instruction and the intent and purpose of the Every Student Succeeds Act that 'all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards and assessments.'"
She congratulated them, saying" We are extremely proud of McKinley’s efforts and are very honored to have the opportunity to recognize their hard work and accomplishments celebrated in this manner."
