District Calendars Revised to Recognize MLK Day
Posted on 07/25/2018
Over the last several months, we have been having conversations about how best to recognize and honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The AASD 2018-19 school calendar approved by the board last November reflected that the date of the holiday recognizing his birthday would be a scheduled Records Day. This would have meant that students would not have attended class so that educators could work on student progress reports for the first semester.

At last night’s AASD Board of Education meeting, a revised calendar for the 2018-19 school was unanimously approved. The purpose of this revision was to create a “no school day” for all staff and students on January 21, 2019 to honor the federal holiday recognizing the birthday of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A second late start day was added on January 23, 2019 to give educators additional time to work on student records and progress reports.

Moving forward, our district will follow a school calendar that allows us to join together with our entire community to celebrate and recognize the federal holiday. Currently, plans are being developed with community partners to provide opportunities for valuable service to others through the first annual MLK Community Day of Service. This calendar change will allow any students or staff that would like to participate to do so with their families and other community members.

We are committed to working with our students, families, community members and staff to continue to recognize the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through meaningful classroom and school-wide activities.

Last night’s board action is a great example of how we are learning together about how best to support our district priorities including a safe, welcoming and inclusive school environment for all. We are on a journey together in becoming a more culturally responsive organization – for every child every day – in every classroom every day, in every school every day – across this district. We will do this by working together, as a team, with input from students, families, staff, and the wider community.
