Tough Kid Course Challenges over 950 Kids

From Gary Wondrash, Physical Education Teacher at Highlands Elementary:

On Saturday, October 1st, 2016 over 950 kids and hundreds more of their parents and grandparents invaded the Highlands/Odyssey School grounds. The kids had one goal in mind: achieve the title of one of the Fox Valley’s Tough Kids by completing the Fox Valley’s Tough Kid Challenge. The challenge was a 2 mile course complete with 27 physical obstacles that stood between them and that coveted title.

The Fox Valley’s Tough Kid Challenge brought family and fitness to the forefront. Kids (their parents) paid $10 for the right to take on this challenge. Their parents could go along for free. The kids received an event T-shirt, a Tough Kid Challenge slap bracelet, and a Tough Kid Challenge finisher’s dog tag.

The weather was cloudy and cool, but the rain held off as the brave participants overcame the distance and the obstacles. As I watched the kids move through the course and finish, I noticed they all had one thing in common. They all were grinning from ear to ear. Parents were full of smiles too.

The event was such a positive hit for Appleton and the Fox Valley that many asked if there is going to be a next year. The answer to that is there will be a next year. The Fox Valley now has a new youth fitness event.

The exciting thing is that participants didn’t only come from Appleton. We had a kid sign up from Wausau, two kids from Escanaba, MI, and multiple sign-ups from Green Bay, Neenah, Oshkosh, New London and other local communities.

All in all, it was a great day for family and for fitness.
