October 20th "Lights On Afterschool" Events Celebrate Afterschool Programs

Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their role in keeping kids safe, inspiring them to learn and helping working families.

The effort has become a hallmark of the afterschool movement and annually sees more than 1 million Americans celebrate at more than 8,000 events nationwide.

Check out the alphabetical listing below to see how our participating schools will be celebrating on Thursday, October 20th. The below events are open to current afterschool program participants.

Badger Elementary
Corresponding Organization: Boys & Girls Club (Space Available)

October 21, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.

Available activities for members will include Bingo, Obstacle Course, making Dirt Cake and an Art activity!

Foster
Corresponding Organization: Boys & Girls Club (At Capacity)

October 20, 3:30-5:15 p.m.

For Lights On we are going to do a "Star Wars" theme. 

Highlands Elementary

October 21

Highlands will be hosting a costume party for Boys & Girls Club members in celebration of Lights On After School.

Horizons Elementary
Corresponding Organization: YMCA (Space Available)

October 20

We are making tie dye t-shirts for the kids to wear that night with a possibility of having an opportunity to decorate them.

We will have some other activities that revolve around the theme of Lights On, such as coloring sheets, activity sheets, fact sheets hung up on the walls, and decorating light bulb shaped cookies.

Jefferson Elementary

October 20

Jefferson will be hosting a student talent show beginning at 5:30 p.m. with refreshments to follow.

Johnston Elementary

October 20, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. 
We will be doing a fall festival/carnival.  We will have games, prizes, juice and cookies.  We will be inviting all Johnston teachers as well as all Ycare families to join us.

Kaleidoscope Academy
Space Available
October 20, 4:00-5:00 p.m.
 
Our theme is… Hollywood! Our torch club has been helping to plan/decorate this party! We will have different activities running, including a Red Carpet Relay Race, Karaoke, Best Paparazzi Contest, Cupcake decorating, and a mini hair salon!

Lincoln Elementary

Snack/Check in 3:16-3:30 p.m.
Proclamation and After School Heroes Recognition (community partner, student from each grade level and one staff)—3:45-4:10 p.m.
Glow Walk- 4:10-4:30 p.m. (all students will receive a glow stick bracelet and a glow stick necklace)

Free choice activities: 4:30-5:30

 - Go Noodle
 - Floor Hockey and Scooters

McKinley Elementary

October 20 from 6 - 7:30 p.m.

McKinley is doing a family math night. 

Wilson Middle and Columbus Elementary
Corresponding Organization: Boys & Girls Club (Space Available)

October 20, 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.

Wilson will be hosting the event for Columbus.  Our theme this year is life size games so we will have things like life sized Mario Kart, Hungry Hungry Hippos, or Pac Man.
