ACA students to take part in student-led art exhibition
Posted on 01/04/2017
Last year the Appleton Career Academy class “DIY Art Gallery” made the papers and was a great example of career based learning and community engagement.

This year, teacher Elyse Lucas ramped the project up to have students make their projects come to life at the Global Arts Gallery in Manitowoc. Students were given as smaller selection of artists to choose from, curated the works, designed the gallery layout and designed a logo and exhibition guide for the show.

The students are going to physically hang the works themselves at the Global Arts Gallery on Jan 29th from 1:00-4:00, host an invitational art opening at GAG on Feb 11th from 1:00-4:00, and then disassemble the show Feb 25th 1:00-4:00. All artists who are contributing work to the show are invited to attend the opening. Students will run the opening, giving speeches, thanking artists and describing their process in making the art show.

This exhibition is open to the public.

More about the project:

Educators, Elyse Lucas, Appleton Career Academy, and Frank Juarez, Sheboygan North High and founder of the 365 Artists 365 Days Project, collaborate on an innovative art project, which results in a student-led art exhibition at Global Arts Gallery in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Exhibiting artists are Daniel Fleming (Milwaukee), Erica Huntzinger (Sheboygan), Julie Jilek (Appleton), Tonia Klein (Milwaukee), Melissa Dorn Richards (Milwaukee), Sara Risley (Milwaukee), and Sara Willadsen (Sheboygan Falls), and an installation titled, “Interpretation of the Vision of Rudy Rotter” by Zephirine Moon Garden.

This project begins with the story of how a Wisconsin art teacher, Elyse Lucas, created a very unique art lesson by implementing the 365 Artists 365 Days Project into her curriculum under the consultation of Frank Juarez. This project brings two art professionals into the conversation, communicates the importance of educating students on the logistics of putting together a successful art exhibition, how to work with regional artists, and to network with local businesses/gallery owners to determine a possible venue for a student led art exhibition, “Abstract Perspectives”.

This exhibition will be held at Global Arts Gallery, 702 York Street, Manitowoc, Wisconsin 54220. The exhibition runs from January 29 – February 25, 2017 with an artist reception on February 11, 2017 from 1-4pm.

The 365 Artists 365 Days Project highlights contemporary artists from across the globe through an online interview platform through the collaborative efforts of Frank Juarez and Zina Mussman and Rachel Quirk of Greymatter Gallery. Since its inception in 2014, it has introduced artist on a daily basis via online and social media. To date, it has featured over 700+ artists working in various media, processes, and studio practices.
