S.A.G.E:
SAGE SCHOOL
Columbus School
will be one of six SAGE schools in the Appleton Area School District.
SAGE is a program funded by the State of Wisconsin using federal funds
to decrease class size at the primary grade levels. Research studies
have shown that Kindergarten through third grade classes that have 18 or
fewer students result in higher achievement. The studies show that
students who are in small primary classes maintain their learning achievements
even as they enter intermediate classes of more traditional sizes. Columbus
School will use SAGE money to lower class sizes in Kindergarten and 1st
grade, during the 2000-2001 school year. We will then move the lower
class size into second and third grade during the next two years.
Teacher to student ratios will be kept at approximately 1 teacher for every
15 students for core subjects: reading and math.
What a wonderful
learning opportunity for our students and their families. |

Title 1 :
Columbus School
is a building wide Title I school which entitles us to federal funding.
Through this funding we are able to support a Title I teacher who provides
reading support and instruction to all levels to improve performance of
all students at Columbus. In addition, Title I dollars support additional
interpreter time. All title I schools have a core value of increasing
parent involvement in their child’s education. We are indeed fortunate
to have these resources for our students.
