Update 4/5/17
The Board of Education is excited to announce the names of three candidates who will be interviewed by the Board of Education on April 11 for the superintendent position.

After conducting a nationwide search, School Exec Connect presented six high-quality applications for review.

The Board narrowed the field to the following three:

  • Dr. Judith Baseman, Assistant Superintendent, AASD
  • Mr. Ben Vogel, Assistant Superintendent, AASD
  • Dr. Van Truong, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, Portland Public Schools

Finalists will move to another round of interviews on April 18 with both community members and the Board of Education interviewing the candidates. The Board anticipates the new superintendent will be selected and announced shortly after.

The new superintendent will begin duties on July 1, 2017.

Superintendent Profile
The New Superintendent Profile will guide us in the selection process. The New Superintendent Profile is based on input from the community regarding the District’s strengths, challenges, and the desired characteristics of the next superintendent. Findings from the survey and community input will be compiled and reported to the Board on March 20 and are available below:

We thank AASD staff, students and the community for their candid feedback through the public survey, focus groups and our community forum.

Process

The Board has selected SCHOOL EXEC CONNECT, an educational search firm, to assist with the superintendent search. The first step in this process is to create a New Superintendent Profile, using information gathered from interviews, focus groups, a community forum and an online survey.

The superintendent position will be advertised and candidates will be recruited from February 27 to March 27, 2017. On April 4, the Board and consultants will meet to review and select candidates to be initially interviewed. The Board will interview four to six recommended candidates on April 11 and will select finalists. Each finalist will be invited for an all-day interview on April 18.

An advisory committee consisting of staff, parents, and community members will conduct interviews. The Board will then conduct the final interviews and select the next superintendent. The new superintendent contract will be approved in late April or early May.
