Elementary Day Study Update
Posted on 06/07/2018
An Elementary Scheduling Committee has been in place at the district level for a few years. The committee’s role was to develop a set of guidelines to advise Elementary Site Scheduling Committees.

The district’s Elementary Scheduling Committee decided at the end of the 2016-2017 school year that the group’s focus needed to expand beyond setting scheduling guidelines to addressing the challenges with the elementary day.

The goals of the Elementary Day Study are to increase educational opportunities for all students, improve student achievement, improve teacher confidence and job satisfaction, lower teachers’ overall workload, and improve teacher retention.

The committee is working to answer the following key questions:
 - How do we structure the elementary school day?
 - How do we teach within the elementary school day?
 - How do we provide time for job embedded professional development and collaboration for elementary educators within the professional work day?

For the 2018-2019 school year, some elementary school grade levels will participate in a pilot study related to either how the elementary day is structured or how instruction is implemented within the elementary day. Parents of students who would be involved in these pilots will be informed by their school in fall 2018.

District-wide implementation of changes to the elementary day, if any, would not occur until the 2019-2020 school year at the earliest.
