Providing Access to Healing - School based mental health therapy program

United Way's PATH (Providing Access to Healing) forPATH Students is a school-based program designed to improve access to mental health services for children and youth who are unable to obtain care elsewhere in the community.

PATH was created in 2008 by United Way's Promoting Health, Healing and Crisis Intervention Impact Area in response to the growing need for mental health services. PATH was originally started as a pilot project in the Menasha Joint School District, offering services to elementary, middle and high school students experiencing barriers to care.

Beginning in 2011, PATH was expanded in two phases over two years to nine other school districts. These include the Appleton, Freedom, Hortonville, Kaukauna, Kimberly, Little Chute, Neenah, Seymour and Shiocton school districts.

Participating Appleton Schools

  • Lincoln Elementary School
  • Horizon Elementary School
  • Wilson Middle School
  • Roosevelt Middle School
  • Madison Middle School
  • West High School
  • East High School

The PATH program within the AASD targets students with barriers in attaining mental health care, because of cost or access. A certified therapist visits each of the above schools for predetermined days and times each week. Parent permission is required for students who are under eighteen.

Benefits

  • Data has shown that students selected for participation in this program during the 2011-2012 school year have improved school performance as demonstrated by improved grades, decreased number of failed classes and decreased absenteeism resulting from mental health issues
  • Because the certified therapist is located at the school, parents do not have to provide transportation or miss work and the student is able to lessen the amount of class missed
