Literature Circles get students talking about books and stories. This approach to studying literature encourages inquiry, individually and in groups. Students have to work together to get a complete picture of what they read, and they work individually to develop ideas to bring to the group. At this level, most students need a little help in picking out important and interesting ideas, so we use role sheets. On this page you will find copies of the role sheets used in our various lit circle groups. You need Acrobat Reader to open these files.

Assignment guidelines:

  • Read your selection twice. The first time through, just try to figure out what is going on. The second time, try to focus more on your role.

  • Read only as far in the book as you have assigned yourselves. Discussion will be difficult if everyone has stopped at a different place in the story.

  • Be as complete as possible in filling out role sheets. You need enough information to keep the discussion going.

  • If you are absent, you must still complete your assigned role sheet unless you hear otherwise from me. You are excused from the discussion log.
