Title VI - Indian Education Program
Title VI - Native American Indian Education Program (NAIEP)
In 1972, the Indian Education Act (IEA) was established to address the unique educational needs of American Indian and Alaskan Native students from Pre-K through 12th grade. This legislation recognizes that these students have distinct needs, which is where the Title VI Indian Education Program plays a vital role.
The Appleton Area School District’s Title VI - Native American Indian Education Program (NAIEP) is designed to promote academic achievement, increase college enrollment, and raise awareness. In partnership with Fox Valley Technical College, the program provides individualized academic support, higher education transition assistance, and enrichment opportunities for Native American students in grades 4K-12.
The program offers enrichment activities that reflect and honor the tribal values and traditions of our Native American students, parents, and families. These events provide students with hands-on learning experiences, giving them the opportunity to interact directly with American Indian resource people.
Through these experiences, our American Indian and Alaskan Native students gain a deeper understanding of perspectives, philosophies, and traditional teachings that help them develop their unique identities and reach their full potential as students, community members, and global citizens. The Title VI Indian Education Advisor also serves as an educational resource for the Appleton Area School District and the local community on American Indian history, traditions, and tribal sovereignty.
As a public school district, AASD’s mission is to provide each student with a positive, enriching learning experience that goes beyond academics. Achieving this goal requires educators to understand our students as individuals. We are committed to doing the hard work necessary to build trusting and caring relationships with each student. Without this foundation—and the dedication of our educators—student learning cannot thrive.
