What is Act 20?

Wisconsin Act 20 is a state law that requires schools to assess early literacy skills for students in grades 4K-3. This helps ensure that every child receives the support they need to develop strong reading skills. It aims to improve literacy outcomes for students in Wisconsin by:

  • Requiring early literacy assessments and intervention plans for 4K-Grade 3 students
  • Requiring additional teacher and principal training and coaching to ensure high quality instructional literacy practices are occurring in all schools

The AASD supports this new legislation and has been engaged in this work long before this law has been passed. Through the use of our English Language Arts (ELA) Program Evaluation, ELA Literacy Audits, monthly teacher trainings, and new structured literacy resources in phonics and knowledge building curriculua, we are committed to providing all our learners with strengths-based literacy instruction and responsive interventions.

We believe all students deserve to read at proficient levels and we are committed to supporting our teachers and principals in growing their capacity to reach this goal.

How are we improving literacy outcomes in the AASD?

With your help, our Early Remediation Plan partners with Act 20 and is designed to support and enhance reading instruction beginning in our youngest grades. Our teachers and staff are dedicated to continuously improving literacy practices.

Act 20 highlights the importance of a collaborative approach, involving families, educators and community members in supporting our students’ literacy development.

Science of Reading

The science of reading is a vast body of research that teaches us how the brain learns to read and write.  This research identifies high leverage instructional routines for our teachers, and what instructional supports and “next steps” we need to take for students that may be at risk for reading difficulties.  Our goal is to remediate those areas quickly with your help!
