2020 MLK Jr. Community Day of Service

2020The second annual MLK Jr. Community Day of Service was held Monday, January 20, 2020, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at West High School, located at 610 N. Badger Ave. in Appleton. It was free and open to the public.

This day of service was organized by the community for the community with the hope of continuing Dr. King’s legacy of civic and community service. There was a community march, soul food sampling, student cultural performances and presentations, community booths, and volunteering opportunities both on and off-site.

The community march began at 9:30 a.m. at the main entrance of Wilson Middle School, 225 N. Badger Ave. and ended in the auditorium of Appleton West. The program started at 10:00 a.m.

Participants were inspired by performances from our elementary to high school students. We also learned more about Dr. King through videos and presentations, and heard directly from our students.

Nonprofits, community agencies, and other diverse organizations were located in the West Small Gym and shared their resources and services as well as offered volunteering opportunities to learn, engage, and impact the community.

We’d like to thank Guardian Life for their continued support and sponsorship of the soul food sampling catered by Cozzy Corner. The menu included a variety of soul foods along with a famous peach cobbler.

We appreciate the Chartwells K12 food service staff members who volunteered with us. We also want to thank Meijer for their donation.

The day culminated with an opportunity to serve others. Participants were encouraged to pre-register for volunteering opportunities that took place in the afternoon. Volunteer opportunities included the Community Clothes Closet in Menasha, two Habitat for Humanity ReStore locations in Appleton, the Appleton Public Library and Riverview Gardens in Appleton. For those that prefered to stay onsite, we had service projects and activities available at Appleton West that included kindness rocks, inspiring cards, and assembling care packages.
