October 2024 Updates
In the fall of 2022, voters approved both referendum questions on the ballot. One question supported increased staffing and operational costs for our new spaces and the second question approved $130 million for the construction/renovations of our schools.

Progress, timelines, and updates on referendum projects will be shared on our district website. We encourage you to follow along to see our community’s investment in action.

Below is a more detailed list.
  • Reduction of Kindergarten-2nd grade class sizes districtwide
  • The hiring of 12 STEM teachers at the elementary level
  • Modernization of our four middle schools, adding capacity to allow for the inclusion of 6th grade, and updating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) areas
  • Building a new elementary school on district-owned property to accommodate enrollment growth on the north side of our district
  • Completing individualized projects at each elementary school to create a STEM space, improve security as needed, and update available spaces
  • Build additions and complete renovations at our three high schools

Sandy Slope Elementary School

See renderings here: Sandy Slope Site Plan, Building Exterior, Classrooms

Construction on the new 600-student elementary school is progressing this fall as scheduled.  The building is almost fully enclosed with interior walls starting to be built. Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing lines are following the walls and areas are starting to take shape.

Site work has started with curb and gutter and the first layer of asphalt is scheduled to be placed by the end of the fall paving season. Finally, the geothermal contractor has completed drilling on over 100 (500’+) wells.

Sandy Slope will open for the 2025-26 school year.

Middle School Additions
Construction at each of the middle schools was completed before the start of the 2024-25 school year. These projects expanded the buildings to welcome 6th-grade students to the three former 7-8th middle schools, renovated spaces to accommodate STEM-centered spaces, and modernized other parts of their buildings.

Einstein Middle School
Einstein’s projects included a new cafeteria seating area and a two-story classroom addition. The existing Technical Education Center was remodeled to accommodate the new STEM curriculum.

Kaleidoscope Academy
KA underwent two separate additions to the existing building, along with a remodeled STEM area. This included a single-story classroom addition and a new auxiliary gymnasium. The main office was also relocated to enhance building security.

Madison Middle School
On the north side, a single-story addition adjacent to Calumet Street includes new accessible fitness and orchestra areas and two classrooms. On the southeast side, a two-story classroom addition was completed before the start of the 2024-25 school year. The existing STEM rooms were also remodeled.

Wilson Middle School
Wilson’s projects included a large two-story addition with new classrooms and an auxiliary gymnasium. The existing STEM areas were redeveloped, and the main office complex was relocated to improve building security and accessibility for the public.

High School Projects

East High School

Construction started in July and is progressing on both the two-story addition and the fitness center expansion. The foundation is in place, and walls are beginning to rise for the two-story addition, with the roof expected to be completed by December 2024. Similarly, the fitness center expansion has its foundation poured, and the walls are also starting to go up.

West High School

Construction began in September on the stand-alone indoor physical education and sports practice facility, with the foundation already poured and the steel structure set to arrive by early November. The roof is scheduled to be completed by the end of November. The outdoor concession stand project has been bid, with construction planned to start in spring 2025. We are also in the design phase for the rear parking lot reconstruction, aiming to have it completed by the end of summer 2025.

North High School
The two-story fitness addition which includes two new classrooms is well underway.  The foundations are complete and construction continues with exterior block walls and interior bearing walls.  Electricians and plumbers are also currently working on their underground lines.

Miron partnered with Inspire Wisconsin, a non-profit that provides equitable access to a comprehensive list of career experiences and exploration, to host Building Your Future with Miron at Appleton North High School on October 18.  During this hands-on experience, students got an inside look at the innovative work taking place at the high school, saw skilled trades in action, and received information on how they could start their careers in construction while still in high school.

The next major task to begin soon is the structural steel followed by the roof truss and decking in December. Remodeling of the existing interior spaces is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2025.  This includes the construction of two additional science labs. The school’s Technology Center will also be undergoing a remodel to better serve the current curriculum.

Elementary School Projects
Design work on the elementary school projects is ongoing with construction scheduled to start in June 2025. The projects include establishing STEM spaces in each school and enhancing security measures at Ferber and Houdini.

Classical School

The walls and roof are complete for the seven-classroom addition at Classical Charter School, with interior work set to begin in the next few weeks. Plans are also in place for interior renovations to three classrooms: a STEM room, an Art room, and a Band room, all scheduled for improvements. Work on these three classrooms will start at the end of the 2024-25 school year.
