Volunteer in the AASD
United for Reading Success (UFRS)
United for Reading Success (UFRS) is a high-quality and well-structured volunteer reading program for our youngest students.
The intention of the UFRS program is to encourage children to enjoy books, support their efforts to learn to read, and to celebrate their successes.
The UFRS program is aligned with AASD’s reading curriculum and instruction and is intended to build confidence and create lifelong readers and learners.
This programs includes all AASD elementary schools.
Here's what you need to know:
- It's easy! Materials are simple and straightforward. You don't need teaching or tutoring experience.
- It takes motivation! A strong belief in the importance of education is critical.
- It's fun and rewarding! Your help will make a difference in these students' lives.
While most volunteer activities do not require special skills, all volunteer efforts require patience, flexibility and a positive attitude. Training is always provided to new tutors.
Here's how it works:
- Complete an application
- You will be scheduled at the desired school (Fall to mid-May)
- One day/week as a regular tutor or
- Once every 4-6 weeks as an active substitute
- You will receive training on the program curriculum and processes
Tutors will typically volunteer one day/week for 1-2 hours, depending on the school and the program they are volunteering for. A greater commitment is possible and always appreciated (e.g. two days/week). Flexible scheduling is possible and can be accommodated.
Volunteer After School
The Appleton Area School District offers high-quality, sustainable out-of-school time learning opportunities and programming for students.
These programs are provided through partnerships with the Appleton YMCA and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Fox Valley (BGC).
Each school has staff to coordinate and manage the after school program, but volunteers are a tremendous help and very appreciated!
High school students are especially encouraged to get involved in this program as volunteer mentors after school.
Secondary English Tutoring
Tutoring a student who is learning English is a unique and rewarding opportunity! We are looking for volunteers to support Newcomer middle and high school students in Appleton by helping them practice basic conversational English.
As a volunteer, you’ll partner with 1-2 students for a semester or academic year, assisting them in building confidence in English literacy and communication. Training, support, and guidance will be provided by Hope & Help Together (HHT) and AASD’s school-based English Learner team to ensure a fulfilling experience for both you and the students.
