Human Growth and Development Instruction

More about this notice: This notice is posted on the Appleton Area School District website in accordance with Wis. Stat. § 118.019(3), which requires school districts that provide human growth and development instruction to annually notify parents and guardians about the curriculum used at their child’s grade level, how they may inspect the complete curriculum and instructional materials, and the exemption available to students. The statute also requires districts to make the complete curriculum and instructional materials available for parent or guardian inspection upon request, including before they are used in the classroom.

Appleton Area School District begins instruction in human growth and development in Grade 5. Under Wisconsin law, parents and guardians are notified each year about the human growth and development curriculum provided at their child’s grade level.

Curriculum Information

The human growth and development curriculum is age-appropriate and aligned with Wisconsin academic standards and the district’s Board-approved curriculum.

Parents and guardians may review the full, published Board-approved human growth and development curriculum at any time. The complete curriculum and instructional materials are available for inspection upon request, including before they are used in the classroom.

Parent/Guardian Exemption

Wisconsin law allows a parent or guardian to request that their child be exempted from human growth and development instruction. Parents or guardians who wish to request an exemption should contact their child’s school for information about the exemption process.

Students who are exempted from human growth and development instruction will still receive instruction in other subjects required by Wisconsin law, including instruction related to alcohol and other controlled substances and other required health instruction, unless the student is separately exempted as permitted by law.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to review the curriculum and instructional materials and contact the district with any questions about human growth and development instruction.
