SCHOOL COUNSELING SERVICES

The Appleton Area School District’s Comprehensive School Counseling Program is committed to helping every student acquire the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that promote student achievement and personal success in the areas of academic, personal/social and career development. School counselors empower all students to become lifelong learners, and responsible, self-motivated citizens in a global community.

Specific goals for students addressed through the School Counseling Standards include:

1. Academic Development

  1. Acquire the attitudes, knowledge, and skills that contribute to successful learning in school and across each student’s life span.
  2. Develop the academic skills and attitudes necessary to make effective transitions from elementary to middle school, from middle school to high school, and from high school to a wide range of postsecondary options.
  3. Understand how academic experiences prepare students to be successful in the world of work, in interpersonal relationships, and in the community.

2. Personal/Social Development

  1. Acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and interpersonal skills to understand self.
  2. Learn to appreciate the diverse backgrounds and experiences of others and how they impact the learning of students.
  3. Demonstrate effective decision-making, problem-solving, and goal setting skills.
  4. Understand and use safety and wellness skills.

3. Career Development

  1. Acquire the self-knowledge necessary to make informed career decisions.
  2. Understand the relationship between educational achievement and career development.
  3. Employ career management strategies to achieve future career success and satisfaction.
