Procedures
Protective Devices:
All students, teachers, employees, and persons entering hazardous areas or engaged in activities or operations that are potentially hazardous to the eyes in the Appleton Area School District shall wear eye protective devices at all times.
All eye protection equipment purchased for the Appleton Area School District must meet the standards of the American National Standard Institute (ANSI), Practice for Occupational and Educational Eye and Face Protection, Code Z87.1 – 1979 and subsequent revisions thereof. Prior to delivery and in bid specifications, suppliers must certify that devices for order meet the above-mentioned standards.
Locations and Situations Requiring Eye Protection Include:
Physical and Biological Science Laboratories, Technology Education, Art, and other miscellaneous classrooms.
- Eye protection devices must be worn in all areas (labs, classrooms, and demonstration areas) where chemicals are handled and where any activity or operation is potentially hazardous to the eye. These devices must be worn whether or not contact lenses are worn.
- Operations that are particularly hazardous (implosions, explosions, or high intensity radiation) require special protection.
- Where demonstrations are shielded or isolated, eye protection is not required. However, all persons exposed to hazards are required to use approved protective eyewear.
- Visitors and frequenters to hazardous areas must wear eye protection devices as required.
- Each staff member has the responsibility to ensure that those persons in a hazardous area (visitors, students, faculty, or frequenters) wear approved eye protection.
Maintenance and Custodial Activities:
- Maintenance and custodial activities expose the eyes to a variety of hazards. These activities are similar to typical shop and laboratory practices and require that protective equipment be used.
- Visitors or frequenters to maintenance shops or areas where custodial or maintenance activities are being performed must be kept out of the exposed areas or wear approved eye protection as required.
Hazard Warning Signs:
All eye-hazardous areas must be so designated.
Enforcement:
It shall be the direct responsibility of the teachers, Department Heads, and supervisors to enforce and insist on the use of eye protection devices at all times.
Any student failing to comply with such requirements may be temporarily suspended from participating in said activities. Registration of a student for such a course in which said activities are performed may be cancelled for willful, flagrant, or repeated failure to observe this policy.
Any employee failing to comply with such requirements may be temporarily suspended from work and may be dismissed for willful, flagrant, or repeated failure to observe this policy.
All services personnel shall comply with the eye safety program.
