K-12 AI Guidelines

AI (Artificial Intelligence) is technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human learning, comprehension, problem solving, decision making, creativity and autonomy. - IBM (2024)

In bringing AI into the school setting, we must maintain two perspectives:

  1. how can it support student learning, and
  2. determine its role and value in students’ lives, as well as the risks involved

Core Concepts and Goals

AI is:

  • a tool in educational exploration
  • a critical thinking tool to stimulate curiosity in problem-solving
  • a partner in the learning process
  • a technology tool that weaves new resources into learning
  • an inquiry aid in developing research skills, analysis, and informational examination
  • a tool used to uphold values of respect, inclusivity, and academic integrity

Responsible Use of AI

(Teachers will clarify if, when, and how AI tools can be used in the classroom.)

  • Initiating the creative process (writing, visual arts, music composition)
  • Identifying relationships- connecting concepts to the research that supports it
  • Communicating- personalized language exercises and interactive dialogue simulations (to build vocabulary and interpersonal skills)
  • Creating and Enhancing Content- personalized study materials, summaries, quizzes, and visual aids to help organize one’s thoughts and content
  • Fact Checking- cross-referencing information and claims
  • Disclosing- acknowledge/cite the use of an AI tool
  • Planning and Revising- writing

Prohibited Use of AI

Per our district policies,

  • bullying/harassment is never allowed
  • plagiarism and cheating are never allowed.
    • DO NOT submit AI-generated work as your original work
