K-12 AI Guidelines
AI (Artificial Intelligence) is technology that enables computers and machines to simulate human learning, comprehension, problem solving, decision making, creativity and autonomy. - IBM (2024)
In bringing AI into the school setting, we must maintain two perspectives:
- how can it support student learning, and
- determine its role and value in students’ lives, as well as the risks involved
Core Concepts and Goals
AI is:
- a tool in educational exploration
- a critical thinking tool to stimulate curiosity in problem-solving
- a partner in the learning process
- a technology tool that weaves new resources into learning
- an inquiry aid in developing research skills, analysis, and informational examination
- a tool used to uphold values of respect, inclusivity, and academic integrity
Responsible Use of AI
(Teachers will clarify if, when, and how AI tools can be used in the classroom.)
- Initiating the creative process (writing, visual arts, music composition)
- Identifying relationships- connecting concepts to the research that supports it
- Communicating- personalized language exercises and interactive dialogue simulations (to build vocabulary and interpersonal skills)
- Creating and Enhancing Content- personalized study materials, summaries, quizzes, and visual aids to help organize one’s thoughts and content
- Fact Checking- cross-referencing information and claims
- Disclosing- acknowledge/cite the use of an AI tool
- Planning and Revising- writing
Prohibited Use of AI
Per our district policies,
- bullying/harassment is never allowed
- plagiarism and cheating are never allowed.
- DO NOT submit AI-generated work as your original work
