Board Seeks Public Input for Superintendent Search

Board Seeks Public Input for Superintendent Search
Posted on 12/13/2021
The Appleton Area School District Board of Education has begun the search process for a new superintendent who will begin their duties on July 1, 2022.

Appleton Area School District Superintendent Dr. Judy Baseman has been a part of the AASD for twenty-six years. During this time, she has served the District as an assistant principal, principal, assistant superintendent, and is in her fifth year as the Superintendent of Schools. We are appreciative of her service to the Appleton community and wish her well in her next steps.

The Board has selected the Wisconsin Association of School Boards (WASB), an educational search firm, to assist with the superintendent search. The first step in this process is to create a New Superintendent Profile, using input gathered from an online survey and focus groups. The New Superintendent Profile will guide us in the selection process.

The Board of Education invites the wider Appleton community to share their input and help us as we select the next leader of the Appleton Area School District. Our community will have two ways to share input, in an anonymous online survey and through virtual or in-person focus groups.

In the anonymous online survey, you will be asked to prioritize the personal characteristics, leadership styles, specialized skills, and expertise that you believe are most important for the district’s new superintendent. Additionally, two sections ask you to indicate what you believe are the strengths and challenges of the Appleton Area School District. Find the AASD Superintendent Search survey here. This survey will close at midnight on Tuesday, January 4, 2022. The survey should take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

If you would prefer to fill out a paper copy, they will be available at the District Leadership Center, 131 E. Washington Street, Suite 1A starting on Monday, December 13, 2021. Paper copies must be returned to the Leadership Center by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 4, 2022.

The Board also invites you to participate in one of our Community Focus Groups facilitated by WASB Consultants.

Two virtual focus groups will be held on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. or Thursday, January 6, 2022, from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. Each Zoom meeting will have a limit of 500 attendees. Registration is required. Registration information can be found here.

Two in-person focus groups will also be held on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at Kaleidoscope Academy, 318 E. Brewster Ave. in the Multi-Purpose Room from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m. or 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. As a reminder, at this time masks/face coverings are required for all students, EC-12, all district staff, and all visitors while indoors within district facilities.

Findings from the survey and community input will be compiled and reported to the Board during their regular meeting on January 10, 2022, and will be available on the district website by January 14, 2022.

If you have questions or feedback regarding the Superintendent Search, please contact Louise Blankenheim, Wisconsin Association of School Boards at (920) 286-1864 or lblankenheim@wasb.org, or Sally Sweitzer at ssweitzer@wasb.org with any technical issues relating to the survey.

We look forward to your input as we search for a new superintendent to lead the Appleton Area School District.
