Secondary (7-12)

AASD Common Summative Assessments will be:

  • Used by all teachers/all students in an AASD Standards-Based Course (SBC)
  • Created by district SBC course development teams (CSS, teacher leaders, and AC&I)
  • Aligned to the same task and format
  • Aligned to the same standards (ELA writing standard tasks may need to be based on a below grade level reading standard)
  • Meeting grade level rigor/DOK of the standard (may need to be accommodated based on student’s needs)
  • Assessed on the same rubric
  • Supported by the same resource (if applicable to the course)

Determination of Student Grades

  • Minimally 3 pieces of evidence per assessed standard per semester labeled with a ❗ 
  • All common summatives must stay in 90% category 
  • Anything in the 90% category must have a  
  • Additional pieces of evidence can go in either the assessment or the practice category 
  • Anything labeled with a must be completed in order to earn a passing grade for the semester no matter the grading category
  • All assessments with a ❗ must be graded on the proficiency rubric
  • *If the 90% ASSESSMENT category indicates student mastery, the student’s grade should reflect mastery and not be penalized by the 10% PRACTICE category. 

The AASD SBC grading scale will be used to determine a letter grade from the numerical value.
Student Accountability

Students are required to submit their assessment(s) on the due date(s). Any assessment(s) not submitted by the due date(s) will only be accepted up to the last day of the unit. The last day of the unit will be communicated to the student and family, minimally two weeks prior to the end of the unit, through a Canvas Message and Canvas Announcement.


Students must complete the initial assessment (any piece of evidence that will determine the student’s grade) in order to have the opportunity to reassess. Students should show specific evidence of additional learning prior to reassessing, as determined by the teacher in collaboration with the student. The reassessment score will replace the initial assessment score only if the reassessment score is higher. Students will be given the opportunity for reassessment up to two weeks past the last day of the unit. 

*Reassessment deadlines at the end of the school year will be determined by the site.

Monitoring Student Progress in Canvas

  • ❗ When you see the red exclamation mark in Canvas, this indicates an assignment/assessment that will be calculated in determining the student’s grade.  Please ensure your student is completing these assignments as this is their greatest opportunity to demonstrate their learning.
  • To best communicate with students and families and provide opportunities for achievement in the classroom, teachers will include a weekly overview of student learning, upcoming assignments and assessments and important resources.  
  • Grades will be updated by 8:00 AM on Mondays, unless the teacher has communicated otherwise in Canvas.

In a traditional grading system, a student’s performance for the grading period is certified through the accrual of points, often converted to percentages, which includes assignments introduced as practice or 1st attempts in learning. 

The essential question answered in a traditional grading system is: How many points have I accrued on everything evaluated throughout the grading period?

A standards-based grading system certifies a student’s demonstration of performance on a standard by the end of a grading period.

Standards-based grading: 

  • clarifies learning goals/targets
  • clearly identifies success criteria for learning goals/targets
  • states clear indications of student strength/weaknesses
  • provides information on career and life skills
  • supports instructional practices that maximize student motivation
